Accessing the Internet

It is often safest to use a combination of kid-friendly search engines, directores or portals and additional software tools to ensure safe internet usage.

Kid-friendly Search Engines, Directories and Portals
Search Engines
You can find good sites and specific online content for your kids through a search engine which is a program that searches documents for specified keywords and returns a list of the documents where the keywords are found. Current popular Search Engines include Google, Yahoo!, Alta Vista, AOL, MSN, Netscape and Excite that enable users to search for documents on the World Wide Web.

Websites are often hand-selected for directories - classified by topics - and the website may pay a fee to be listed.

Portals, or points of entry into the world wide web, tailor information by age and interests and usually provide a range of other services.

Many search engines, directories and portals provide kid-friendly information or filter out sites that are inappropriate for kids.
